Unspoken Voices
Unspoken Voices is an evening-length dance work surr ounding immigrant stories. Shared through contemporary movement and orig inal text, Unspoken Voices highlights shared and contrasting experiences among immigrant artists living in New York, NY. In the work’s premiere, natives of Colombia, Costa Rica, France, Italy and Japan offered insights to their respective journeys through movement and personal stories.
The work additionally featured stories from the University Settlement Adult Literacy Conversation Club, and was developed thanks to the generosity of Lavie’s 2023-2024 residency with The Performance Project @ University Settlement. This residency engages young local artists and emerging professional artists with opportunities to connect, create and publicly present new work.
Unspoken Voices details advantages, cultural differences, dreams, and struggle through a shared lens of navigating life in New York, NY as an immigrant artist. Unspoken Voice’s hallmark offers shared empathy within each immigrant’s experience despite differences in upbringing.
